Taking a break

I’m nursing a broken ankle (and bike) after a school run mum decided to pull out in front of me Tuesday morning. “I wasn’t expecting a bike”, she said.
She has a point. When driving our regular commutes, I guess we tend to see only what we expect to see, with the rest fading into the background. If only more people cycle then she would have expected, and looked for me on two wheels before turning out of the side entrance into the road. It was her fault of course, but it was also ours for not cycling enough.
So I’m taking a break. Just when the weather was getting better too.

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Enjoy reading your blog. Do you mind me asking where in Galway did this occur, and in what direcion you where travelling. I cycle over 100km a week in Galway city and some junctions are worse than others for this type of behaviour.
Oisin – Coming down the Dublin Road into town, the car pulled out from Renmore Park once she saw there were no cars coming.
The child in the back saw me and shouted to her mum, but by then it was too late
I know that spot well. That section of road is not great either – its very very bumpy(I tend to avoid that downhill section on my commute because you judder and rattle all the way down the hill) Adopting the “Primary position” going across junctions like this helps on the visibility stakes but still would have the brakes covered in case an “Emergency Stop” was required.
Hi,
I recently wrote a report on “cycling as means of transport in Galway” and want to make it into a documentary. Anyone who is interested in the report or would like to take part in the film, as interviewee, expert, cyclist or film crew, please get in touch with Yvonne: ivydvd@gmail.com.
Ouch. I always found the folks picking up kids have seem to have a sense of righteousness to them. Or maybe its more a clueless “I will park where I want” attitude.
Anyway was wondering if anybody wanted to join us for a brainstorming meeting this Saturday (3rd) at the Bierhaus 2pm. We are organizing a critical mass (public ride) event and are seeking the input from as many people as possible. There is a facebook page just search critical mass galway (facebook)
all the best and a speedy recovery,
Simon

Hi Blánaid
I am looking to put together a team of people who have a interest seeing cycling portrayed in the Irish media a manner that will encourage increased growth in cycling.
Would you be interested in participating?
